Child Care

Abundant Beginnings will be providing drop off child care (covered with infant registration) for children 2 months to 5 years old. Healthy snacks, toys and developmentally appropriate projects will be available. There will also be quiet space for feeding infants and for young children to nap. Preschool aged children will be able to move between child care and the children's zone throughout the day with their designated facilitator to engage in projects and read stories with the older children.  Schedule At-A-Glance

Children's Freedom Village

Grow your own plants, learn about grey water systems and alternative energy. Talk about all different kinds of PEOPLE POWER! The children's zone has rotating projects,open art stations,  books, workshops games and exhibits for young folks ages 5-12. Focused on growing, farming and social justice. Parents and caregivers are welcome to hang out in the Children's Freedom Village with their children   or can drop off while they participate in other aspects of the conference.  Schedule At-A-Glance

Youth Cohort

Sponsored by Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project, youth (ages 13-22) at BUGs will have opportunities to learn from the elders at the conference while also learning new things on their own. After the opening ceremony, all youth attending are invited to show off their culinary skills in an Iron Chef style competition! Each young person will work in a group to create a dish that represents their families, communities, or heritage. Saturday will be filled with games, workshops, and cooking. Sunday we will announce the best recipe and take pictures of the winning team!

 Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project has a quarter acre farm located in the City of Oakland’s Tassafaronga Park (83rd Ave & E Street, 94621) is planned, planted, harvested and sold by youth grades K-8 and 100% of the proceeds are placed into individual savings accounts for those who participate. Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project (ANV) elevates life in the inner city by challenging oppressive dynamics and environments through urban farming. www.anvfarm.org  

Shayna Cureton is the founder and director of Abundant Beginnings, an outdoor education project. With over 15 years experience working with children, Shayna is dedicated to improving how we educate our children and build communities using the lenses of queer feminist theory, critical pedagogy and attachment research. She studied theater and child psychology at USC and is an avid urban farmer and Black activist.Shamia Sandles has been working with youth in schools, community centers and churches for 10 years. She coordinates youth-led participatory action research projects and garden mentor programs assisting young adults to become stewards of healthy environments. She has experience managing after school programs, teaching cooking classes, gardening and conducting community-based research. She earned her BA in Anthropology and  African Diaspora Studies from Hamline University and her MA in Visual Anthropology from San Francisco State University.
