Four colleagues from Brazil and South Africa are visiting the U.S. working to build solidarity with communities in our country.
Alessandro and Joleci, members of the Landless Workers Movement (MST), are visiting the US as part of a learning exchange organized by the US Friends of the MST. Currently, they are visiting and spending time with trade unions, grassroots organizations in Los Angeles, Oakland and Berkeley. MST’s goals with this learning exchange is to understand the political and economic context for working families and the perspective of social movements in the US.
Petrus, member of the Right to Agrarian and Food Sovereignty Campaign, and Norah, from the Rural Women’s Assembly, are visiting the US as part of an exploratory phase for a grassroots-led learning exchange between farmers and farmworkers from US and South Africa. This visit is part of the strategies discussed at the US-Africa Food Sovereignty Summit in Seattle last year.
Petrus and Norah will share their perspectives on the political situation and food sovereignty in South Africa. Norah will additionally discuss women’s leadership on reclaiming land in the region and the women’s organizing strategies. Joleci and Alessandro will share perspectives on food sovereignty in Brazil and Latin America, the education and political training practices that their organization uses. Joleci, Alessandro, Petrus and Norah bring a global perspective on food sovereignty and food justice and help to nourish links of much needed international solidarity.
